So we’ve all been waiting eargerly to find out more about the surprise Bungie and MLG announcement scheduled to come out of San Diego’s competition today, and there’s been more than enough guesses as to what it might be.
A new map from the upcoming map pack, for sure, but in what form? Speculation has been running rampant accross the web, with everything from remakes of Midship to Sanctuary being thrown around wishfully.
The time has come however, to finally lift the lid off the mystery.
The big news is a new map. It is a remake. And it’s called… Cold Storage. Better known as Chill Out, from Halo: Combat Evolved.
For those unfamiliar with Chill Out it was a multiplayer map from Master Chief’s first outing and largely considered one of the best maps for close quarters 2v2 and 1v1 based play. Set on a floor of steaming nitrogen and surrounded in Covenant architecture, it was an extremely varied map in terms of layout. The original played heavily on the use of teleporters to get around – something that until recently (in Sidewinder’s remake as Avalanche) hasn’t played all that much of a role in Halo 3’s multiplayer – so it’ll be interesting to see how much of an accurate representation of the original ‘Cold Storage’ turns out to be.
Naturally, we’ll have to wait and see for more information from Bungie HQ over the coming days, with hopefully next week’s update bringing a screenshot or two for us to peer at. In the meantime, if you’d like a better idea of what a Halo 3 Chill Out might play like, you could always download one of the many Forge creations modelled on the classic. Arguably the best can be found here, courtesy of iTs NeXn.
So there we go, Chill Out, the next map to join the likes of Sidewinder and Lockout in Halo 3’s remake arsenal. How does that make you feel? Personally, I was kinda hoping for Midship to make a return, but I’ll happily take Chill Out, sorry… Cold Storage any day of the week.
**UPDATE**
MLG have posted the first images of the now confirmed Cold Storage, taken from the event. Check ’em out over here.

Comment by Walla June 15, 2008 @ 10:01 amWhat, no middy or gulch? Freeze this junk and launch it into space. Leave it in storage. Cold Storage, whatever.
How was that?
But seriously, why no midship or blood gulch?
Comment by D-thunda June 17, 2008 @ 12:33 amI got into halo for vehicular combat! Maps like avalanche, but bigger!
I never liked Midship. ><
I would like to see Blood Gulch again, though.
Comment by Walla June 17, 2008 @ 4:29 amOf all the maps i would want to be remade i would want Midship, Blood Gulch, Ascension, Ivory Tower and some others but i can’t remember the ones from halo 2……………. map wise i think that halo 2 is ALOT funner in replayablity compared to halo 3
i want to see a map pack with no remakes and maps that would become as good if not better than halo 2’s

Comment by vis July 3, 2008 @ 12:08 ami guess it sounds cool…i agree with the headlong map coming back though…that was pretty cool……..for a new map though i think that they should make one where ur in a city…a really big map like sandtrap but city theme…………and something ive been dying for ever since halo the first is i want to be able to fly a pelican (human dropship)…..and it pisses me off that they never let us do that
