When digging around in Hex editors with the code of the Halo 3 beta you can find so many things. Some good, some bad, some impossible to decipher. This particular find, I’d place into the good catagory.
New Vehicles!
Here’s the list of vehicles found so far within the beta code data:
Mongoose
Warthog
Hornet
Pelican
Scorpion
Ghost
Brute Chopper
Spectre
Shadow
Banshee
Phantom
Wraith
So some old favourites are returning (Scorpion, Wraith, Spectre) along with some familliar but up until now uncontrollable ones too (Phantom, Pelican, Shadow), and the introduction of some entirely new vehicles on top of that (Hornet, Chopper). There really will be no need to walk anywhere in Halo 3.
I’d take a guess and say the Hornet is a UNSC version of the Banshee, a one man flying vehicle with a little fire power – that way the vehicle sides are a little more balanced now that we’ve got the Mongoose and all, and it keeps with the UNSC’s habit for naming vehicles after wildlife. What is most interesting though, is how big are the maps going to need to be if we’re all flying around in Pelicans and Phantoms? The beta code we’re dissecting contains all the text for onscreen messages such as:
Hold RB to drive Hornet
Hold RB to operate Pelican Turret
Hold RB to drive Shadow
Hold RB to ride in Phantom
So it’s in there folks, we’re gonna have a whole lot more to play with this time around. There may be more, this is just what we’ve found so far in the beta code, and who’s to say it’s all even in there? Stay tuned.

But you never got to drive it. Also, nowhere here does it show any concrete evidence that you can drive it. It says you can operate it’s turret. Whoopedy Doo. And you can ride in Phantom, still nothing about driving.

This is real becuase gamepro does not false advertise and it shows the map Shrine. Shrine is that “Ginormous Vehicle Apocalypse Map”. On the magizine page it tells about the map and it shows the Chopper and a bunker in the background. Also, on Shrine it has towers that gun you down if you go too far outside the map. (Like the turrets on Snowbound)

The hornet is good online for dropships because there a harder target to hit and if u had a pelican it would be pretty stupid cause it can hold 10 people and theres onle 16 players on the map and you would’nt be much room to move around in beacause common. if there was a pelican on say…..coagulation you would like jump in it at by the time you like get to max speed you would already be on the other side of the map but it would be pretty sweet to use the troop carrier warthog online because you could get your team and go like across the map doging missiles and stuff then you drop 4 troops of then go back to base and pick up the other 3 plus the pelican would be boring to ride and they should of made the moongoose have 2 guns on the front-see you online (RODJOB):-)
