Goodbye Master Chief?
August 1, 2007, 4:30 pm
Filed under: Campaign, Gaming, Halo, Halo 3, News

Found in the pamphlets available at Projekt Revolution, where Linkin Park (amongst others) were playing live in concert, comes this potentially stomach turning and revealing Halo 3 advert.

It’s been speculated upon time and time again, but are Microsoft really planning on ‘offing’ Master Chief in this final chapter?

I dunno about you, but I’m leaning towards a yes… and it pains me to think about it.

Damn thats deep… (Tear)

Comment by Rico117

i hope not

Comment by spartanized

Like Neo, Frodo, Ellen Ripley, and many others before him. Every epic trilogy requires the protagonist to die at its climax. It was alluded to in the Halo books (regarding John’s luck and how it must eventually run out).

Comment by Knuckles Dawson

frodo didnt die he went on a boat

Comment by ryguy

i love deep stories

Comment by Kenhalo

NOOOOOOOOOOO, dont die master chief! protect yourself!!!

Comment by L33tm0d2

that doesn’t mean he died

Comment by Kenhalo

damn… I bet it was the AIDS that did him in, too… 500 years into the future and still no cure for it

Comment by The Doza

The way it is worded; uh I don’t know it sounds like a tribute not an obituary. But that’s my opinion. I think everyone expects the worst but don’t dramatize it.

Comment by Orion

it sounds like hes dead all its missing is in loveing memory of and u got an obituary all tho p that would go at the end after he dies and t sounds like an ending. this would be a good time to be in the tv buissnes because if thats the ending there will be alot of thrown remotes at the tv

Comment by pgod311

this is heresy!!!!!!

Comment by Flamedudeace

I believe I speak for all halo fans-no, the world when I say i would shed a tear.
Would you cry 7th columnist?

If chief dies, it will be headline news…

Comment by D-thunda

Like a little bitch, 7 would weep HARD.

Comment by 7th Columnist

Master Chief will sacrifice himself to save the world (maybe for Cortana :P) and it will be the most heroic scene in history; I’m crying just thinking about it :D

Comment by Danny B

I dont believe that Master Chief will die untill the games end or climax, I rather see the Arbitor die or some other minor character die instead of the Chief would make the game for me even better but the games already amazeing at how far the Halo series has come since Halo 1

Comment by Sid

lol he survives all this time without a bubble shield then when he gets it, he dies?

Im sure if he does he will go out with a bang.
I will cry for the Chief!

Comment by Michael M

If he really does die, this will be historical news and I bet he’ll definately be mentioned in upcoming HALO games as a LEGEND like the game Peter Jackson is making. I hope he doesn’t die even though it is a great climactic way to end an EPIC Trilogy… =(

Comment by CHAOT1C V3NOM

Maby master chief dies cause he cant rescue cortana which in turn she dies and leads to him not being able to live without her?

Comment by jaysonfire99

That doesn’t mean he dies. it could mean the are honoring him as a hero. the life part could mean his life as a solider he might just leave (though death is more likely)

Comment by A Random Reader

@ ryguy

“frodo didnt die he went on a boat”

Frodo going on a boat is obviously symbolic for going from life to death. Plus, he was stung by this blade on weathertop, but he got a second chance from that hot elf chick so he could “complete his quest”. at the end, his quest was complete so he didn’t need the life anymore.

OT: I hope he dies, it would be a rlyy good end, although I would sure as hell cry.. but even if he doesn’t die, I’m sure Bungie will come up with a good ending.

Comment by V Meister

dont die master chief

ur my hero , the only reason to play halo …
if he does i will seriously cry like a little girl… adios MC

Comment by cruzer

im pretty sure he wont die

Comment by cruzer

if he dies it better not be no pussy death like all emotional. he better take out half the brute army and do it in style

Comment by wvgreenb

As long as the Chief has a death that is fitting of his reputation and stature. Bungie wouldn’t let the Chief have some kind of pathetic death.

I’ll shed a tear regardless.

Comment by Bansheesdie

he dies from an infection in a hang nail he aquired while duking it out with the brutes

Comment by distinguish

“he better take out half the brute army and do it in style”
agree :)

Comment by V Meister

Heh… It’d be funny (and frustrating) if he gets run over by a drunk marine in a mongoose.

XD

Comment by Chewy 8126

it could be that hes alive and he is having a great party for saving the planet but you never know.

Comment by redbaron523

Halo is a 3 week Trilogy.
I thought that Halo 2 took place 1 year after Halo 1.

Comment by DEL360X

yeah, what happened between halo 1 and halo 2?

Comment by V Meister

long story between 1 and 2 , basiclly chief grand theft autos a covy ship , and blows up half of a covenant armada while doing it, and then high tales it back to earth, but yes it really is in the course of about 3 weeks

Comment by distinguish

@ V Meister: I recommend reading the Halo novels that are out. First Strike is the third one and tells you what happened between Halo 1 and 2. The comics that Marval made that you can order supposively explains what happened between Halo 2 and Halo 3.

OT: If the MC dies, I wouldn’t mind. I just hope his end is a well memorable one. He’s a hero…a legend…and deserves a good death.

Comment by s1lv3rw0lf

if chief does die, i hope it’s in some massive explosion he created and must die in for some reason that rids the galaxy of the covenant and the flood.
the time-travel theory is solid, it would stop the flood and then chief could stop the covenant.
As long as it doesm’t end on a cliff-hanger, I’m good+the ending must be explosive, tense and exciting!

Comment by D-thunda

D-thunda: “the ending must be explosive, tense and exciting!”
roger that!!

Comment by V Meister

@ s1lv3rw0lf: the last time i read an english book, i was in a coma for 19 days (no, seriously), and i don’t want to risk that again :P

Comment by V Meister

I think the chief wont die until the firght is finished. I think he will have the first record of the the first spartan death, bcuz if u read the books spartans cant die there just MIA, but chief will just go on vacation but the will say he is dead.

Comment by arxseven

ok i thought about the time travel thing n now it seems inplausable , think about it …if he goes back in time to before the first halo game? you already know he fails at what ever he tries to do , because if he succeded there would be no flood in present day, for all we know the chief could be responsible for the flood to be released in the first place ,,, wouldn that be shocking! and also he couldn go back and stop himself fom doing anything or he would have remembered seeing himself in the past ,,, i know its hard to understand and concieve , but the only way time travel would make sense is if he went back in time changed something and that completly split off another line of history and had a diff future , where the chief may have never been born, it seems to me if any time travel is to be done ,it should be into the future ,to a point where the flood have died out from killig everything in the universe and starved to death thus leaving the universe cleansed of flood and everything else , where humanity could start anew

Comment by distinguish

@ distinguish: U got it all wrong, lol… It’s obvious you have never seen a movie about time traveling (or just never paid attention). Time traveling in halo 3 would be plausible, ’cause MC is still in a timeline where he hasn’t yet traveled back in time (goddamn, this is hard to explain). This “MC meeting himself before halo” will happen as soon as he travels back. But since he hasn’t travelled back in time yet, the timeline where the Flood exist is still true. As soon as he travels back in time, though, the period from >where he travels back towhere he travels back from< will be erased from history and will be rewritten. I hope it makes sense, if not, tell me and I’ll try to explain better :)

Comment by V Meister

time travel is stupid and I hope it doesn’t happen in Halo 3 because they haven’t done it before and there not just going to say “hey lets have time travel!” no there not going to do that Master chief is going to kick some covernate a$$es and take no names with the arbitor, eliets, marines, and hunters by his side and tell the proffet of Truth to get his a$$ of my planet right before he shoots him in the head.

Comment by Sid

NO TIME TRAVEL

Comment by Master Tricks

sid, you’re a moron

Comment by V Meister

I’m only saying time travel is plausible, I’m not asking for your opinion

Comment by V Meister

I gotta say, for a long time I thought Time Travel was going to make an appearance, before all the hype for Halo 3 started… but now I’m not so sure.

Personally, i can see how it might be a bit weak to explain it all away with ‘simple’ Time Travel stuff, but then, i love time travel stories… so… i dunno. There’s definitely plenty out there in the Halo timeline to make it possible.

Comment by 7th Columnist

No way time travel will just ruin a perfectly good game

Comment by Master Tricks

I say its not “plausible” its freekin Halo 3 your talking about not f’in time spliters you retarded monkey V Meister go play some time traveling games and tell me how many of thoughs games are as good as the Halo series, yes it could happen but it wont because Bungie has never used time travel in there games they are not going to just put it in and say well “lets go to da future!” no there not there smarter than you and they know whats best for Halo 3 so leave them to make campaign they’ve done a great job so far lets not try to invent plot twists and new story by adding “time travel” into a game that dosen’t have time travel! Also yes this is my opinion but my opinion is like most Halo fans which is “don’t fix something thats not broken” and if you don’t know what that means your the moron!

Comment by Sid

Oh and by the way I’ve followed what Bungie has done in there games since Marathon so I think I would know what could work in Halo 3s campiagn, and time travel is out of the picture ,V meister reminds me of a child who says something like oh lets”duel wield rocket launches” and my favorite “Is tuna chicken or fish?”

Comment by Sid

@ v meister
, yes i have seen plenty of time traveling movies , and its obvious u havent payed much attention and dont think about it enough to understand time travel,if Mc goes back in time and say meets up with himself and stops the flood from ever escaping , it will either A not affect time traveling MCs future at all ,only change the Mc he went back to stop/help, or it will B completly change it to where he may not even be alive , and everything could be different, what your saying is MC goes back and stops the flood from ever releasing, and goes back to present right?, well if he changed such a signifigant thing like that , then the future would be completly diff when he got back , see anything he changes doesnt affect him or the people in his time where he came from , i think your thinking like this is *planet of the apes* , that movie was soo far off of time travel ,same with *back to the future* ,changing the past only splits off another parralell universe , because your actuall past has already happend and cannot change no matter what , dont beleive me, then look up the term Granfather paradox

Comment by distinguish

WHAT-THE-FUCK

I’m not saying “ooh, Bungie should put Time Travel in halo 3”, “ooh, halo 1 and 2 sucked ballz because there wasn’t any TT in them” or “ooh tuna is chicken” (which is prty damn funny), I’m just saying it wouldn’t be impossible for TT to be in halo 3. And more about this “fixing something that isn’t broken”, nothing was “broken” in Halo 1, but Bungie still made halo 2 and 3..

@ distinguish
u make no sense, try using periods.

@ 7
“i can see how it might be a bit weak to explain it all away with ’simple’ Time Travel stuff, but then, i love time travel stories… so… i dunno. There’s definitely plenty out there in the Halo timeline to make it possible.”

ex-fucking-actly

@ Sid
so what I’m an f-tard monkey, stop making fun of me.

Comment by V Meister

Halo 1 wasnt “broken” it was unbalanced and was improved into Halo 2s gameplay wise and Halo 2 had plenty of glitches then cheaters so they fixed that problem in Halo 3 by giving more customization and more power ups and special abilities for custom games so less people choose to mod. they improved the Halo series as it ran along they didn’t fix realy anything they improved alot of things though.Thats why I stand by our motto “If it isn’t broken don’t fix it!” Improveing is not fixing its more on the line of editing fixing is to start all over and change every thing just like would happen to Halo 3s campaign if time travel was added which won’t.

Comment by Sid

gratz, 121 words in 3 sentences.

Comment by V Meister

no need for periods when you still make a point.

Comment by Sid

He might go back in time to tell the forerunners to never build The Ark, and the Halos

What your saying is MC goes back and stops the flood from ever releasing, and goes back to present right?, well if he changed such a signifigant thing like that , then the future would be completly diff when he got back. See anything he changes doesnt affect him or the people in his time where he came from. I think your thinking like this is *planet of the apes* , that movie was soo far off of time travel ,same with *back to the future*. Changing the past only splits off another parralell universe , because your actuall past has already happend and cannot change no matter what. there i threw in periods , and ok , i think yall need to quit flamming
Vmeister , he was just stating his oppinion and everyone just caught on fire and was like” aww time travl teh suxorzz, u hA73 Bungi3 if u like TT”, just chill people , we all understand that u cant put time travel in multiplayer , but the story would make alot of sense if they did , but in my personal opinion it would be lame

Comment by distinguish

to del360
what would that do? if they didnt build them everyoneone would have died from the flood anyways , and masterchief wouldn be born , along with humanity most likley. But thats only if u put aside the grandfather clause. In the closest thing to reality in time travel , if MC changed anything , it would be changed in our tmeline that he came back too , only changing the future of the universe he changed

Comment by distinguish

oops lol when i said granfather clause i meant granfather paradox lol

Comment by distinguish

Ok never mind the 2 above this one , i wrote them entirly wrong , and i cant edit them and im too lazy to re write them

Comment by distinguish

okay for all those who dont want MC to die imagine what the ending will be like if he survives that will be boring IF he dies it will totally make the ending the best

Comment by ryguy

…who cares if MC time travels or not?

it’s all about GAMEPLAY. And since Marathon had basically the same story, you can expect some similarities. I just don’t understand why time travel would “ruin” the game. It might make it pretty cool.

Comment by K-Bizzle the Dizzle

K-Bizzle ur right who cares about the story i mean yeah its interesting but the reason you play the game is the gameplay, mp , and online i mean the story is just the cherry on top

Comment by ryguy

…. And then Master Chief Returned.
The Ark had not yet activated. He was just in time. The Forerunners, Humans, and the Sangheli (Elites) Where all now safe in the Ark.
The Arbiter was there waiting for the Chief on a UNSC Hornet by the gates.
Master Chief had done his job….
He had finished the fight.

THE END

(This is Fan-Fiction of the end of Halo 3. It is NOT REAL. It is only my thought of the ending.)

Comment by DEL360X

Epilouge:
Master Chief had then hoped on the Hornet. “Welcome Back”, said The Arbiter. The Chief replied, “Thanks.” … I now no why the Oracle calls -Reclaimers-, We’re just like the Forerunners.”, Chief added. “How was it?, Time travel?”, asked The Arbiter. “You can say that it feels like being in a bowl of ice cream.”, replied Master Chief. The Arbiter had no words to respond. Just then a Plasm Motar from a Covenant Capital Ship had hit part of the Hornet…..

Comment by DEL360X

“Chief, It has been an honor fighting by your side. If anything happens to me, I want you to save yourself.”, Said Arbiter. Cortana had then woken. “Chiefff… you saved me from that monsterrr… Thank you.”, told Cortana.
Chief nodded. The now burning Hornet had now neared the entrance to the Ark. The Chief took off his helmet and put it on his lap. He had pale white skin as if he never seen the sun. He had a scar underneath his left eye. He had short light brown hair. He then spoke, ….

Comment by DEL360X

…. “Arbiter, get ready for the celebration, we’re heroes!”.

And with that they entered the Ark, leaving the flood behind to burn while all the Halos explode.

The Human-Covenant War is over.

THE END
Da Dum Dum. Dum Dum.
Daaw daa dummm, dum dum, Daaw Dummmmm….

actually, I said that MC went back in time and that the period of time between *where he travels back from* till *where he travels back to* will be erased from history and be rewritten.

“i think yall need to quit flamming

THANK YOU!!

@ K-Bizzle the Dizzle:
“it’s all about gameplay”
would you be happy if it ends with the Flood and Brutes saying ‘let’s forget about this war and have some tea’?

@ DEL360X
nice music ^_^

Comment by V Meister

look at the year on the box, it’s 2556 that’s four years after halo 2 so unless, four years passes throughout halo 3, which i would think is unlikely, considering he’s on his way to the ark at the end of halo 2, it’s probably at the end of the war as a “Thank you for saving our asses” sort of thing. But even if he did die then, we all knew he was going to die, eventually, everyone does specially in war

Comment by salaamAW

V Meister:

well, to be perfectly honest, I wouldn’t mind all that much (regarding the tea-drinking brutes).
1) that would be hilarious
2) personally, I actually REALLLLLY disliked Halo 2’s campaign; it was a serious disappointment. I thought the levels were boring, the characters weren’t as fun to shoot, and the story was harder to follow and weirder. I hated playing as Arby until the later levels, and when it ended on the cliffhanger I felt there wasn’t even a semblance of conclusion (in H1 for example, the war is far from over but at least you feel a “chapter” has been finished. In H2, you feel you got through half a chapter and then put the book down.) So for me, campaign was ruined in the second game. That’s why although I hope H3 campaign is the best yet (as it is said to be), I’m not putting as much faith in it as I did last time in November. Halo’s always been about gameplay for me… multiplayer, I mean. ESPECIALLY in H2. So even if H3 has a junky story and poorly designed levels, I’ll still have all those cool things I played in the multiplayer Beta to look forward to.

I would glady pay $60.00 for Halo if it was a multiplayer game only. Now that we have 4-people online co-op, it just has that much more of a chance to be COMPLETELY AWESOME!!!

oh, by the way

are they going to make downloadable campaign levels? I expect them to give us downloadable armor types, multiplayer maps, etc. But I was wondering if they’re making new levels for download? (I mean not that I think they wouldn’t finish the story Sept. 25th and finish it as a downloadable. I mean like would they, say, offer “Assault on the Control Room” as a downloadable level?) Do you guys know if it is possible?

anyhoo

can’t wait for more updates

sorry about the long post… especially given the opinionated nature

Comment by K-Bizzle the Dizzle

nice fan fictin v meister!!

Comment by Master Tricks

I dont think they would have extra chapters to finish the fight. People will be like “I have to pay 700 microsoft points to finish the fight? Thats bull!”. A lot of people could get angry. For extra chapter, they might be good for a prolouge. To play directly from the end of Halo 2 on that forerunner ship. Now that would be good. Playing what happened beteewn H2 and H3 or read it in a comic.
I would play.
Anyway. I hope they make the downloadable content great!

Comment by DEL360X

Don’t get me, wrong, I love Master Chief. If anything, the guy’s my hero.

But he has to die in Halo 3. I would much rather he dies now than get rehashed again and again in future story arcs as some tired old act. I want him remembered.

For instance–Sonic the Hedgehog. Great character. But by now he’s nothing interesting. Why? SEGA just wouldn’t let it die. I don’t want Bungie regurgitating and feeding Master Chief to us.

Comment by Retreta

Hmm, after seeing the trailer where Master Chief is being dangled from an enemy’s hand, a gernade in his hand lights up. I am guessing he will die with the baddie that’s holding him. This will spark the fire in the soliders that will win the war! And this leads us back to Halo Wars which happens before Halo 1, and then it will be like the Star Wars movies, the first three movies show the ending, and the most recent ones show how Dark Vader became Dark Vader, but instead of Vader it will be about Master Chief.

Comment by Gordon

In That Fight On halo3.com/believe it says he allowed for himself to be captured so I don’t know.

Comment by Lupus

MC has a plan if hes going to win this wa…. wait what if he alowed himself to be captured and MC is setting them up for a big ambush you know like Brute holding MC: we have him at last!! then thousands of elites, spartans and (marines?) come in just ripping every brute, jackal apart!! that would be awsome

Comment by Master Tricks

Well i guess you could say he might die, Reason says that even in the stories Spartans are Suicidal or draw do Suicidal missions. But remember that Halo has all but Normal to what they might say. If any thing he could die in battle or at the end, But AT no point did they say he died dont you think its odd, no one said He Died fighting or died there, plus even with this new spoiler video there isnt much that is discussed until maybe the end when they are honoring all those who died, Now The fact that after the date Scratched in the structure was the number 117, along with the fact that there was a picture of Cpt Keys and his daughter Commander Keys. I still cant say that he is going to die or not is not completely definite, But there is strong reason to believe he does, maybe John is getting old as a soldier, If how ever the end scene in that video does actually take place, But bungie also likes pulling our leg now and again, stuff like this might all be faked or purposely released to us to cause us to be skeptical and further to keep the secret till the final days so that it is a surprise, Now this whole thing has gotten the effect they want I REALLY WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME, And Finish the fight. and find out what happens in the end, And by Gawd If He dies, if Cortana dies, the Arbiter, Johnson and Miranda, I will shed a tear or give some sign or respect, this story has captured my imagination for like 6-7 years now I started in grade school and will finish playing when im in college And hey There is so many gaps Like how in the game ONI doesnt talk about any thing, or how we know about Spartan II and Spartan III we still havent heard about the originals or where the technology came to produce stuff, and ONI didnt discuss the discovery of forerunner tech on ONYX even when they found Before the discovery of the Halos, or Problems with the Covenant
